American Hiking Society volunteers have been working to restore trails and advocate for hikers since the Arizona wildfires. This week-long effort resulted in a beautiful, accessible area for hikers. The Arizona National Scenic Trail, which runs over 125-miles, was damaged this year by the fires. Volunteer efforts are crucial to the recovery of this area, which has seen record visits and very little staff.

AHS Volunteer Vacations helps improve more than 5,000 miles of hiking trails. Six to ten volunteers make up the group, while larger groups can be accommodated at non-COVID times. Anyone who would like to join an AHS-organized trail services trip can request a crew via the Society's site. They will then work alongside trail organizations and land managers to help maintain the trails in their area.

NextGen Trail Leaders has brought together rising stars in the outdoor community to improve our trails. To improve access to trails, the program has also worked in partnership with national park services agencies. NextGen Trail Leaders Program is an exciting program that unites diverse participants and the American hiker community. American Hiking Society connects people and communities to the outdoors through its work. New reports are expected to be published soon.

How To

How to preserve food in a survival scenario

It is best to dry food when it is in urgent need. Drying foods removes moisture which makes them last longer. It also reduces the possibility of bacteria growth.

Because they don't need to be prepared, dried fruits are ideal for snacking during emergencies. They are portable and can be taken with you wherever you go.

You can make dried fruit at home using a dehydrator, but if you have access to a solar oven, this would be ideal. A solar oven can be used to dry many foods, such as meat, fish, and vegetables.

Airtightness is the most important aspect of food preservation. This prevents oxygen from entering the container and spoiling the food. Preservatives are not necessary if the container is tightly sealed.

If you do decide to add preservatives, try adding salt first. Salt prevents mold growth. Follow this step with vinegar. Vinegar kills bad bacteria and stops mold growth.

You will need to first cut your food into small pieces. Either a pair of scissors or a sharp knife are acceptable. Be sure to pack everything securely so no air can get inside.

Next, place the food inside a plastic bag. Seal the bag and leave it somewhere warm until it dries completely.

Once food has dried completely, it can be stored in a sealed container. It is important not to let food contact other things.
