Wildfire Preparedness Strategies

Residents must be prepared for wildfire season. You can prepare your family, your home and property by following a few simple steps.

What to do during a wildfire

Evacuating is the most important thing that you can do. This is especially true for elderly people and families with small children. However, there are times when it isn't safe to leave the area and shelter in place may be the best option. Make plans with neighbors in these situations to make arrangements to evacuate to their safer homes if necessary.

Prepare for a wildfire

Get your home ready. Take time to remove flammable materials, such as pine needles, from your yard and around your house. This will increase the defensible area around your home and improve your chances of surviving a wildfire.

Keep flammable objects such as gas cans and propane tanks at least 30 feet away from your home, especially during dry weather. Make sure to remove any stacked logs and replace any burned wood with non-flammable materials.

Clearing flammable vegetation

Wildfires are more likely to spread the closer you live from natural areas or wooded areas. It is important to remove flammable vegetation from the ground, such as pine needles or dead grass.

You should consider defensible fencing if your community permits it. This will help to prevent embers entering your home or other buildings. It can also protect your neighbor's property and slow down spread of wildfires.

You can purchase defensible fencing at your local hardware or home improvement store. These can be placed along your property's perimeter and around your entire home, including the basement.

Prepare to Escape a Wildfire

Prepare an evacuation plan, and share it with your entire family, including pets. Make sure that everyone is aware of how to get there.

Keep up-to-date with weather and evacuation advisories for your area to be prepared in case of an emergency. Subscribe to emergency alerts via text or phone and keep an eye on TV or radio for any new information.

It is important to know where your family keeps their personal emergency supplies, and the meeting place for outside contacts. Your personal emergency supply kit should contain medications, important documents, identification, and other items.

Talk to your city officials about the evacuation route and how to get to it. This is especially important if you live in a home that has steep stairs or terrain.

Make sure you have a place to meet for an evacuation and that you practice the plan with your family. This should also include a place where you can meet with your pets or any relatives out of town.

Evacuate your home if necessary

When evacuation is required, be prepared to leave your home and move quickly. You have a better chance of survival if you can get away quickly.
